arkiveret under: amazing, flightsimulator — klaus @ 0:56

hurricane heaven!

arkiveret under: flightsimulator — klaus @ 8:30

the nice people of aeroplane heaven have released a stunning collection of hurricanes for fs9:

...

“This is without doubt, the largest and most comprehensive freeware Hawker Hurricane pack available for FS2004, a Century of Flight. No less than 12 separate models record this fighter’s illustrious history from the Prototype through to the Tank-busting “Hurri-Bombers” of the later war years. There are Douglas Bader’s and Pete Brother’s Mk1 Hurricanes from the Battle of Britain. Examples of the Sea-Hurricane in Mk1 and MkII form. The last Hurricane ever made and a very rare hybrid produced by the Yugoslavian Air Force, to trial a German Daimler-Benz D601A motor in comparison tests with the Messerschmitt Me109. Canadian versions are represented, including a one-off, ski-equipped example. Also included in this pack is a complete scenery of RAF Hawkinge airfield as it was in the 1940s. Produced by Gary Burns, this evocative package contains Spitfires and Hurricanes which perform taxying and takeoff routines. It’s a great place to base your Hurricanes and they certainly look at home. Each model comes with a basic virtual cockpit which is functional in all the major controls. There’s also a 2D panel included. The texture art comes from John Terrel, one of the best in the business and a special paint-kit is provided for those who’d like to try their hand at some alternative texture schemes.” (you will have to register in order to enter the download page)…

botved og olsen

arkiveret under: flightsimulator — klaus @ 19:51

savoia marchetti sm84

arkiveret under: flightsimulator — klaus @ 8:30

...
In 1940, the Regia Aeronautica received a new addition to its bomber force, the SM.84, that was designed to replace the SM.79, but which never succeeded in equaling the performance of its illustrious predecessor. Complete aircraft. The model, created by William Dickens with Abacus FSDS_v3, features the usual moving parts, such as all flight controls, spinning wheels and so on. Two liveries (15°Sq./ 4°Grp./ 7°Stormo B.T., and 241°Sq./98°Grp./43°Stormo B.T.)(completely new textures)by Manuele Villa.

...
This texture set in ‘282°Squadriglia Autonoma A.S.’ livery requires the William Dickens’s Savoia Marchetti SM-84 (sm84_ra.zip) package for FS9. The 282°Squadriglia Autonoma A.S. (Aerosiluranti/Torpedo Bombers) was based at Gerbini Airport (Sicily) during summer 1941. Repaint by Manuele Villa.

savoia marchetti sm82

arkiveret under: flightsimulator — klaus @ 8:27

...
This model reproduces a real SM82 displayed in the A.M.I. (Italian Air Force) Museum in Vigna di Valle, near Rome. The panel has been created almost entirely from scratch, using material found in the net and using some official pictures, with little modifications needed for sim-sake and includes the most part of the gauges expressly programmed by the author, to get a panel ‘as real as it gets’, plus some default gauges. The “Malta’s Knights Cross” displayed on both sides of the fuselage was due to the post-war restrictions To italian Governement to use military insignia. By Italo D’Attomo and Giovanni Quai.

fear of flying

arkiveret under: flightsimulator, lister — klaus @ 10:17

How to fly a plane in 25 easy steps
1. Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory.
2. If you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. If you pull the stick back, they get smaller. That is, unless you keep pulling the stick all the way back, then they get bigger again.
3. Flying isn’t dangerous. Crashing is what’s dangerous.
4. It’s always better to be down here wishing you were up there than up there wishing you were down here.
5. The ONLY time you have too much fuel is when you’re on fire.
6. The propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep the pilot cool. When it stops, you can actually watch the pilot start sweating.
7. When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No one has ever collided with the sky.
8. A ‘good’ landing is one from which you can walk away. A ‘great’ landing is one after which they can use the plane again.
9. Learn from the mistakes of others. You won’t live long enough to make all of them yourself.
10. You know you’ve landed with the wheels up if it takes full power to taxi to the ramp.
11. The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle of arrival. Large angle of arrival, small probability of survival and vice versa.
12. Never let an aircraft take you somewhere your brain didn’t get to five minutes earlier.
13. Stay out of clouds. The silver lining everyone keeps talking about might be another airplane going in the opposite direction. Reliable sources also report that mountains have been known to hide out in clouds.
14. Always try to keep the number of landings you make equal to the number of take offs you’ve made.
15. There are three simple rules for making a smooth landing. Unfortunately no one knows what they are.
16. You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
17. Helicopters can’t fly; they’re just so ugly the earth repels them.
18. If all you can see out of the window is ground that’s going round and round and all you can hear is commotion coming from the passenger compartment, things are not at all as they should be.
19. In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.
20. Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgment.
21. It’s always a good idea to keep the pointy end going forward as much as possible.
22. Keep looking around. There’s always something you’ve missed.
23. Remember, gravity is not just a good idea. It’s the law. And it’s not subject to repeal.
24. The four most useless things to a pilot are the altitude above you, runway behind you, gas back at the airport, and a tenth of a second ago.
25. There are old pilots and there are bold pilots. There are, however, no old, bold pilots.
26. If you find this somewhat daunting, consider buying yourself a flightsimulator…

tupolev tb-3

arkiveret under: flightsimulator — klaus @ 8:45

this was my first commercial add-on… apart from a few of the donationware planes and one of silvia’s packages i have been somewhat reluctant to go out and buy things with so much freeware around in excellent quality… the price is a bit steep (about $20) in my opinion, but i guess it’s fair enough considering you get versions for fs9 and cfs2 in the package… the installation procedure anoys me… you can only use the installer three times and that’s it, but even the slowest can probably figure out how to install into a bogus directory…

i bought this plane mainly because i like strange aircraft (as a matter of fact, i bought one of the il2-expansions just to get it a couple of years ago) with gimmicks (and here you get underwing escort fighters and paratroopers!)

i might consider some of their older planes as well - especially the hawker fury, and i hope, i really hope, that someday someone will make a hawker nimrod…

if you were brought up in the western hemisphere and if you are more than thirty, chances are, that at one point in your life, you were obsessed with plastic models of one kind or another… http://groups.msn.com/boxart/home.msnw is the place for you then… an ever expanding collection of not just boxart-scans but also catalogues, magazines, etc… another group on the same topic: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Box-Art/ (somewhat smaller, though)… and this was my first (getting the upper wing in place was a nightmare):
